Techniques Used In Liposuction

By Virginia Anthony

Every surgery, including liposuction faces challenges. For this reason, certain approaches are utilized to make certain that the operation is successful.

Challenges needed in any liposuction operation includes withdrawing the right quantity of fat, causing the least disturbance of neighboring tissue, such as blood vessels and connective tissue, leaving the person's fluid balance undisturbed, causing the least discomfort to both patient and surgeon .

As techniques have been polished, many ideas have emerged that have brought liposuction closer to being safe, easy, painless, and effective.

As a whole, fat is removed thru a cannula (a hollow tube) and aspirator (a suction device). The vast majority of these surgeries are conducted using "reusable" cannulas. The same reusable cannula is oftentimes used over several years and on dozens if not hundreds of various patients. The reusable cannula is cleaned and sterilized before each use by the doctor or his/her staff. One time use disposable cannulas are also available for these procedures.

Liposuction techniques can be further categorized by the amount of fluid injection and by the mechanism in which the cannula does work. These are called dry liposuction, wet liposuction, super-wet liposuction, tumescent liposuction, laser assisted liposuction

The dry method doesn't use any fluid injection the least bit. This method is seldom used today. In wet liposuction, a little amount of fluid, less in volume than the amount of fat to be extracted, is injected into the area, super-wet liposuction is a technique which the infuscate volume is about the equivalent amount as the volume of fat expected to be extracted. This is the preferred technique for high-volume liposuction by many cosmetic surgeon* as it better balances homeostasis and potential fluid overload. Tumescent liposuction is the forerunner of wet liposuction. The surgeon injects a solution containing a local anesthetic and vasoconstrictor (often lidocaine and epinephrine respectively) immediately into the subcutaneous fat to be abstracted.
