Laser Hair Removal: Is This The Right Option For You?

By Craig Mecham

One of the most popular of all med spa procedures is laser hair removal. It's not just for females, either. A significant number of men are also turning to this procedure to remove unwanted hair. If you are looking for more information on this cosmetic procedure, you have come to the right place. Below you will find the necessary information you need to decide if this procedure is right for you.

In 1976, scientists created a laser to get rid of unwanted body and facial hair. It wasn't long, however, before it was found ineffective. It wasn't until 1995 that an improved laser was available. The treatment was finally available to the general public in 1997 and quickly became one of the most requested cosmetic treatments in history.

Laser hair removal works like this: a beam of laser light is used to kill the hair follicles where the hair grows. If you have laser hair removal done on a very sensitive part of your body, you may want a topical anesthetic. However, the discomfort is very minimal. You can also usually return to work immediately after the treatment.

Dark hairs are usually the easiest to target. These hairs absorb the light much better than those hairs that are light. You will need multiple treatments to see visible results. Normally, five to eight are effective. You may also need to schedule some maintenance treatments to keep the hair completely at bay.

The most common areas for laser hair removal are the upper lip, chin, and legs. Men usually have the procedure performed on their back. The facial areas are very inexpensive to treat and the treatments can usually be performed in about thirty minutes. The legs are a larger area and therefore, are more expensive and require longer treatments.

Side effects include a slight sting when the laser kills the follicle. You may also notice some redness in the treated area. This is usually gone within 24 to 48 hours. There are really very few side effects with laser hair removal and you'll find that many clients will rave about the results.

Laser hair removal is often tolerated much better with people than the use of chemical depilatories creams. Many find these creams and lotions are too strong for their skin. Laser hair removal surgery offers a great alternative to these topical treatments.

For those that are looking for a way to permanently rid their bodies of unwanted hair, laser hair removal should be strongly considered. The treatments work very well and it's one of the only ways to get rid of that tiring task of shaving.
