Peel That Age Away

By Craig Mecham

There are a variety of facial peel substances and technologies that can be used by your dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon. Chemical peel treatments usually come in three different categories. There include superficial chemical peels, medium chemical peels, and deep chemical peels. Each type of peel helps to exfoliate dead or damaged skin and gives your face a healthy looking and radiant glow.

Chemical peeling involves painting the skin, usually the face, with a gel or liquid acid solution that exfoliates a layer of skin. Depending on the type of acid, the strength of the solution and the resulting exfoliation can take off years from the skin, leaving one with fresh, young-looking skin. Chemical peels make a visible difference. A peel can minimize fine lines and make areas of dark pigmentation, such as freckles and so-called age spots, less noticeable. They can also get rid of shallow scars and faint acne pocks.

The different categories of chemical peels penetrate different levels of the skin. The thicker the chemical peel layer, the more effective it is in terms of skin rejuvenation, however it is also more uncomfortable.

Superficial peels exfoliate and rejuvenate the top-most layer of your skin. They can rejuvenate your skin by making it smoother and refreshed and can have some effects on fine wrinkles and discolored skin.

Medium peels penetrated below the top layer of skin to rejuvenate the lower skin and upper layer. You can soften the rough skin, remove fine wrinkles and some discoloration of the skin and improve skin.

Deep peels penetrate even deeper than medium peels and rejuvenate your lowest levels of skins. Deep peels require the use of a phenol product. They have dramatic effects on wrinkles, including the dynamic wrinkles such as the horizontal forehead creases, scowl lines between the brows, crow's feet, and vertical lines around the mouth. They are also effective at improving skin tone.

Dynamic wrinkles are created by repeated facial muscle movement. They are found on the forehead, between the eyebrows, created due to squinting eyes, lips and pursing lips when smoking.

Chemical peels are very safe and effective method of resurfacing the skin. These peels can effectively treat acne blemishes, wrinkles, freckles, leaving the skin rejuvenated and the patient looking fresher.
