Beginner's Guide To Spray Tanning

By Steve Douglas

Spray tanning is a form of sunless tanning. It is convenient, looks natural and most of all it is completely safe.

The Food and Drug Administration regards the main chemical ingredient in the tanning solution to be completely safe when applied directly on the skin.

This chemical is called Dihydroxyacetone and it browns you outer skin. It acts like a tint and only affects the skin cells that the body naturally sloughs.

So in essence your skin cells which are due to shed develop a bronze color. This also means that the tan itself will be temporary because the tan fades with the sloughing of the skin.

Spray tanning is offered at tanning salons, either by a tanning therapist or by entering a spray tanning booth. You can even purchase a home spray tanning system.

Each method varies greatly from one another. Having your body sprayed by a professional usually results in the better tan. This is due to the fact that the work is performed by hand.

When a professional tanner sprays your body they are able to see at close range your entire body. And know which parts need more attention for a more even tan. This service also comes with a heftier price because the cost greatly adds up.

The other option in a salon is to enter a spray tanning booth. The process is very simple as you simply enter, get sprayed and exit. The results will vary by what type of machine the salon has.

Spray tanning home equipment is another option and the machines available also vary greatly. Some are the same machines used by professional spray tanners. Such machines also come with a bigger price tag.

There is good and bad when it comes to spray tanning home equipment. The best thing about them is that you will eventually save a lot of money.

This is especially the case if you frequently require tans. The cons are several and include maintenance and difficulty because it will be hard to reach certain areas of your body such as the shoulder blades.

Experience will tell you which method is best for you. I don't think it is wise to invest in a spray tanning system before even knowing if spray tanning is something you'll enjoy.

You have options and familiarizing yourself with all the options that are available will ultimately help you decide which spray tanning method is right for you.
